In the dynamic and ever-evolving field of human settlements, success hinges on a strong foundation of core competencies. As the Institute of Human Settlement Practitioners South Africa (IHSP-SA) continues to champion progress and sustainability in the sector, it places a significant emphasis on cultivating these essential skills through the implementation of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) policy framework where various professionals involved in urban and rural planning, architecture, engineering, housing development, and related fields are brought together to level up their knowledge.
IHSP-SA firmly believes that fostering a culture of continuous learning and development is the key to unlocking the full potential of housing and human settlements practitioners and professionals. To achieve this, the Institute has established a comprehensive CPD policy framework that revolves around twelve core, complementary, and supporting knowledge areas that were established during IHSP-SA’s inaugural National Practitioners Workshop in Bloemfontein in November 2022. These core competencies have been carefully codified to serve as the bedrock for empowering professionals in the sector and elevating the standard of service excellence. “We, as the Institute, firmly believe that these core competency areas are foundational knowledge for each and every practitioner of human settlements” stated Ms. Siphokazi Kwakweni, the Masterclass coordinator with IHSP-SA. The current Chairperson of the Institute, Prof SJ Mbanga remarked, “We see the codification and implementation of the competency matrix of knowledge areas as a major milestone and driver of practitioners’ expertise to take service excellence to new heights”.
The CPD policy framework encourages professionals and practitioners to take a self-directed approach to their learning pathways. It acknowledges that learning doesn’t stop after graduation but is an ongoing journey throughout one’s career. By participating in CPD activities, professionals can keep up with industry advancements, enhance their technical knowledge and skills, and stay abreast of evolving legislation and policies. The framework’s emphasis is on promoting ethical standards, quality service, and client care in the sector. By fulfilling CPD requirements, professionals demonstrate their commitment to upholding industry standards and ethics. This commitment ensures that practitioners are well-equipped to provide effective and responsible solutions in their work, ultimately raising the bar for service excellence.
The CPD also creates opportunities for networking and collaboration among professionals. CPD events, such as masterclasses, workshops, and conferences organized by IHSP-SA, serve as hotspots for connecting with peers, industry experts, and potential clients. These interactions foster knowledge exchange, sharing of experiences, and the formation of collaborations that can lead to innovative solutions and partnerships within the sector. IHSP-SA’s CPD plays a pivotal role in professional growth and career advancement.
By actively engaging in CPD activities, professionals demonstrate their commitment to ongoing learning and improvement. This commitment enhances their credibility and reputation in the sector, opening doors to new opportunities and leadership roles. CPD equips individuals with the necessary skills, broadens their knowledge base, and positions them for success in the Human Settlements Sector. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development, IHSP-SA empowers practitioners to thrive in an industry that demands adaptability and expertise.
Mr Thando Mteto, a Human Settlements graduate and the current Company Secretary of the Institute noted, “In the quest for a brighter future, embracing CPD is not merely an option; it’s a necessity. Through IHSP-SA’s unwavering support and dedication, the Human Settlements Sector of South Africa is poised to flourish, and the possibilities are limitless”.
